Designing Your Mantra

A mantra is a word or phrase, generally between two and seven syllables. It is a word that takes your mind to the highest realm it can dwell in. For that reason most mantras are names of God or saints. In the Christian tradition the most common mantras are: Jesus, Jesus Christ, JŽsu, Heavenly Father, Mother Mary, Holy Spirit. In the Jewish tradition God is referred to as: Jehovah, Jahweh, Elohaynu. In Islam God is Allah. In Buddhism Buddha is the enlightened one.

In Zoorastrianism Mazda is the name of God. And in Hinduism there are literally hundreds of names, including: Rama, Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, Krishna, Sai Baba, Ganesha, Saraswati, Parvati. You can't very easily use Lord or God as a mantra but you can combine them--so "Lord God" works as a mantra. People who are atheists may feel more comfortable with "Higher Power," "Higher Self," or "Higher Love" (and alcoholics and drug abusers familiar with the l2-step program will generally feel comfortable with "Higher Power"). The point is that you want to be able to quickly direct your mind to the highest ideal you can conceive of.
